File Management, User Care and Common Sense (continued...)

Leave 25% of your Hard Drive free

Yes, I know it seems like a large amount of wasted space. Remember though, just because it seems to be unused doesn't mean it is. Some of that space is allocated for Virtual Memory, Internet Cache files and the Recycle Bin. Other applications often offer the same type of functions, and space on the drive is allocated to them. This means that if you start to add files or programs that impinge on the allocated space, you are going to have troubles.

Some things, like temporary files and folders, require dynamic space. In otherwords, when you install a program from a CD, it often uncompresses all the installation files into the Temp directory and installs from there. Upon successful installation, the files and folders created in that directory will be removed. Originally, the space must be available or you'll see slow downs, hang ups, and unsuccessful installations. Leave 25% of your hard drive free, it will work more efficiently!
