Am I Going To Need Any Tools? If you have to, you can probably get by with a screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner, but let's take a look at what I use in this newsletter. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER - You may need it to remove your computer's case or remove expansion cards. CANNED AIR - A definite must. Your breath won't be strong enough and contains moisture that can promote corrosion on electrical components and connections. Not to mention the fact that you would probably end up passing out. A compressor may be helpful for some jobs, but when working inside a computer its hard to adjust the pressure low enough. Plus the fact that some may also produce moisture. Canned air can be expensive if bought in individual cans at a computer store or electronics shop. Look around for a bulk warehouse or wholesale type of store and you can usually get 2 or 3 cans for the price of one. ANTI-STATIC WRIST STRAP - If you've come this far, you should know what this is for. VACUUM CLEANER - I use a vacuum cleaner for peripherals and the outside of the computer's case. Inside, I worry about ESD. With the movement of dry air and the brush on the vacuum, it just seems to be perfect conditions for the buildup of static electricity. Yes, I know you can buy vacuums for computers and electrical equipment. I know you can get them with grounded nozzles. I still don't like to suggest their use. If I do use one inside a computer, I spray the brush lightly with anti-static spray. I really don't know if this helps or not, but it makes me feel better. You be the judge. SLOT COVERS/PLASTIC FACEPLATES - If they're missing, they should be replaced. You can strip them from an old computer and keep a few on hand. I've found one store with a box on the counter and a sign that says "If you need one, take one." Check around. NYLON CABLE TIES - Tidy up the cables inside. Rubber bands are not good for this purpose. HEX BOLTS AND NUTS - I'm talking about the ones that hold a port connector in place. These are not hard to find. All you need to do is get hold of an old expansion card and take them off. ANTI-STATIC SPRAY - You can usually steal it from mom's laundry cupboard. Bounce sheets are useful too. WINDOW CLEANER (DILUTED) - Mix window cleaner and water half and half in a small spray bottle. DAMP CLOTH/MILD SOAP SOLUTION - When I say 'mild soap solution', I mean almost no suds. Soak the cloth and wring it out as much as you can.
