Always make backups that you trust,
and know how to restore them from the DOS prompt. And make the backups
before you work on the Registry. After is too late.
-
Use a little common sense. Check out
the other keys and values around the one you want to work on. Windows
stores keys of the same type in the same places. Make sure of what
you are removing. Measure twice and cut once!
-
Make one change at a time. If you
make several changes at once, and Windows won't restart, you don't
have any idea which change caused the problem.
-
If you can make the changes you want
via the operating system, or one of Windows utilities, do it that
way. Don't play in the Registry if you don't need to.
-
Document as you work in the Registry.
If you're trying to fix a problem, it's nice to know what you've already
tried. Besides, who knows, you may come up with a new and interesting
Registry tweak! :)
